At first, I was planning on placing these pictures on PBase and dropping the URL and a quick note to "check out" my vacation pictures on a few of the local boards. I decided against that for a few reasons. First, these pictures are only a bit over a dozen of almost 1000 taken over a 7 day period and represent not necessarily the best pictures I took, but a few that struck an emotional chord within me. Secondly, I wanted to be able to editorialize a bit about the pictures and the trip, and I figured that this was the best way.

My work schedule is such that while I only work a four day week, it is difficult to take a week off and do more than very local travel. This summer we decided to actually do a week by car up the coast from Los Angeles where we live to San Francisco. My wife picked me up at work with our packed Jeep and two girls on the evening of Thursday August 15'th and we headed up the Grape Vine ( Interstate 5 ) through Central California towards San Francisco. Our original intention was to stop along the way when we got tired, and after a quick sleep actually get into San Francisco on Friday mid-morning. Adrenaline rushes being what they are, we stayed alert and made it all the way to the hotel we had Friday reservations for in the city. Unfortunately at 1:30AM, we were about 14 hours early for check in, but were hastily offered a room by a hotel employee after being turned down by the night manager. It seems that Embassy Suites run a computer program from about 1:00am to 4:30am which makes it difficult for them to know what rooms are unoccupied. The night manager actually suggested that we go sit in the local International House of Pancakes until 4:30 A.M. Our kids were asleep in the back of the car, and while my wife were sitting in the car discussing what hotel to try, someone actually ran out to the car with an offer of a room. The local IHOP was about our last option - there are a lot of hotels in San Francisco.

I was excited to be on this trip since I was packing my newly received Canon D-60. I also recently bought a 70-200mm F2.8 IS, and 50mm F1.4. I had two other lenses, a Canon 28-105 and 75-300IS. The 75-300IS was left at home due to space restrictions and the fact that the 70-200 was bought to replace this lens. I had also just purchased a LowePro Mini-Trekker 200 and Lowepro TopLoad Zoom Pro bag as well to carry my new gear. I brought along my laptop to store and view pictures on the road, as well as email some pictures to friends and family.
